Tanners <dave.tanner@ns.sympatico.ca> on 03/27/98 11:09:56 AM
Hello everyone, If anyone has no interest in the "Tanner" line of
Lunenburg, please press the "delete" button now as this is a lengthy
recap of my assembled info on Hans Jacob Tanner, an original settler
in Lunenburg County, & should be of use to those with a Tanner
branch. If anyone who reads this, has any thread of info that I may
have overlooked or any suggestions on how or where to proceed, please
advise. I apologize in advance to those who might consider this as
"clutter" in their mail box.
Dave Tanner-Halifax "The Tanner
Tracker"
----------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------
Hans Jacob Tanner (abt 1718-1811) No European connection for Jacob has
been made as yet. He was in Schaffhausen (Canton or city ?) in about
1741 as his oldest son George's published death notice in 1837 states
this. Desbrisey "History of Lunenburg", page 344 says
"....He (George) was born at Schauffhausen in Switzerland and at his
demise had lived 95 years, 9 months & 10 days". The next paragraph is
an E-mail received from Don Shankle in 1996.
"The Tanners accompanied the Shankles & Mossmans down the Rhine from
Switzerland to the Dutch border. It was here at Cleves, on the German
side of the border, that three of them got themselves in trouble. They
spotted some deer across the river at Emmerich, went over
& shot one for food. This being a private game preserve, they had
committed a criminal act which would preclude their being able to
immigrate. John Dick, the agent, heard of this & quickly whisked them
across the border to avoid losing his commission for their
immigration. The three were Hans Jacob Shenkel, David Mossman & Jacob
Tanner. The three families sailed on the "Ann" in 1750, being the
first group of foreign protestants to land at Halifax. The Schenkels,
there were two
groups of three, come from Fehraltorf in Zurich Canton. The Mossmans
probably also came from Zurich Canton. They must have boarded the same
river vessel that the Tanners had boarded upstream on the Rhine." (Oct
1996).
While I have not tracked down the source of this story, Winthrop Bell
in "Foreign Protestants" makes reference to the same situation on page
138. Both the Shankles and Mossmans were listed
passengers on the "Ann" but the Tanners were not listed as on this
ship. Jacob Tanner, his pregnant wife Elizabeth, three young children
John George, Anna Maria & Ursula Barbara and his sister Barbara are
presumed to have arrived in Halifax on the "Alderney", one of only two
early ship arrivals in Halifax for which passenger lists have
apparently not survived. (the other was the "Nancy"). The
justification for this theory is contained throughout pgs 158-166 in
Bell's "Foreign Protestants". The Alderney was a former navy vessel
recently purchased by George Heyliger, a London Merchant. The Alderney
sailed from England on June 12 (23), 1750 with an estimated 370
persons on board but by July 6 (17), the ship had not got beyond
Plymouth. She arrived in Halifax on August 22 or 23 (Sep 2 or 3) with
353 persons on board with her people being "in good health at their
arrival owing to ventilators, there being none on Mr Dick's ship". The
"Ann" set sail from Rotterdam about June 29, 1750 & arrived in Halifax
on September 2 (13). The "Nancy" arrived on September 16 (27).
Bell in "Foreign Protestants" talks of mass confusion and infighting
over emigrants in Rotterdam which delayed the sailing of the "Ann" for
some weeks & it finally left as overcrowded. Perhaps the
Tanners could not get on & went on to London as there were rumors that
emigrants from England could get free passage. In any event, Jacob &
wife Elizabeth had a child Christian baptized at St Paul's Anglican
Church in Halifax on October 12 1750 which means he was either born at
sea on the ten week trip or Mrs Tanner made the crossing in cramped &
crowded conditions in the last trimester of her pregnancy with three
children under nine years of age.
Bell's notes state: Hans Jacob Tanner: 1752-Halifax North Suburb,
Jacob Tanner, 1 male above 16, 1 female above 16, 2 males under 16, 2
females under 16. Lunenburg Vict List of Feb 23 1756: Jacob Tanner,
Ursula, Ursula, Christian, George, Philip, Maria, Ursula.
Married to Elizabeth ? buried Jul 28 1753 at St Pauls in Hfx, then
Ursula ?. There were 3 Ursula Tanners in Lunenburg in 1753. (third
Ursula presumed to be Ursula Lawner, niece as the surnames are similar
& she is not on the list with her family-apparently no other Bell
notes on Tanners-CDT).
A Barbara Tanner married Peter Launer in Halifax in 1750 and she is
assumed to be a sister of Jacob as her first son and daughter were
named Jacob & Ursula.
There is some confusion on the wife of Jacob Tanner. Son Chris born to
Jacob & Elizabeth in Halifax in 1750. Subsequent children in Lunenburg
born to Jacob & Ursula. Bell assumes wife Elizabeth was buried Jul 28
1753 in Halifax (St Pauls) & that Jacob married an "Ursula" (no record
of this). We assume that Ursula & Elizabeth are same person as first
child of Ursula in Lunenburg was baptised 9 mos & 3 weeks after the
"Elizabeth" was buried in Hfx. The Elizabeth who died
was likely a child of Samuel or Andrew, 2 English Tanners in Halifax
in 1750.
Jacob & Ursula Tanner had three more children in Lunenburg: John
Philip (1754-1822), George Peter (1756-1780) & Anna Barbara
(1759-1763). No death info has surfaced as yet on either Jacob or
Ursula Elizabeth but the estate of Jacob was probated Nov 20 1811 with
son George as Executor. George signs as "Danner" (19882-PANS)
Most likely theory, at present, as to point of origin in Switzerland
is: Pennsylvania German Folklore Society, vol 16, pg 194, of 1951 (Dr
Don Yoder & Dr Ernest Steinemann). In a list of 122 families
that emigrated (1734-1752) from the Canton of Schauffhausen to the
American colonies, there are eight Tanner (Thanner) listings, all from
Bargen, a small town in the northern tip of Switzerland near the
German bprder. They are 1) Hans Jakob Tanner (1749) to Carolina with
wife and three children 2)Hans Tanner (1744) with wife and children,
allegedly to Carolina but probably Halifax 3) Hans Jakob Tanner (1744)
to Halifax with wife and daughter in law 4) Jerg Tanner (1744)
allegedly to Carolina but probably Halifax 5) Anna Thanner (1742) to
Pennsylvania, described as Urban's wife or widow 6) Hans George
Thanner (1751), blacksmith, to Carolina with wife & daughter 7) Hans
Jakob Thanner (1750) to Pennsylvania with wife and children &
nicknamed "Juck" 8) Michael Thanner (1751) to Carolina with wife and
six children. Two unnamed families also went from Bargen to
Pennsylvania in 1751//Michel Danner, Ship Forest, 1752.
Theory as as March 1998 based on the above info: Hans Jacob & family
made his way to England between 1744 & 1750. He likely was the "Jacob"
on the Rhine in 1750 with Mossman & Shankle but this could have been
one of the other Jacobs going to America. They sailed to Halifax on
the
"Alderney".
Bargen Vital Statistics: In a publication in German called "DIE
KIRCHENBUCHER DES KANTONS SCHAFFHAUSEN", pg 6, there is a section
called "VERZELCHNIS DER
KIRCHENBUCHER" and, under the town of Bargen, it says: SIEHE
MERISHAUSEN G:1727©1848 & E:1728©1848 & S:1751©1848. It also says
FAMILIENNAMEN (1727ª1753) GEUGEL, LEU, TANNER.
I wrote to the Canton of Schauffhausen in 1997 asking about these
records. They did not have them and could not confirm that they still
existed. Thet did advise that they are not in Salt Lake City
(Morman Church) and that I should write to Bargen. I wrote twice, in
English, to Bargen in 1998 but never received a reply. These records
could hold births of the three Tanner children & the marriage of
Jacob. With no knowledge of German & limited resources, I am stalled
here.

Greetings TANNER Researchers,
Here's the first generation of TANNERs for your consideration. It's
based heavily on the wonderful research of Dave Tanner of Halifax.
Dave's solved several misconceptions about this family including that
the
Elizabeth TANNER who was buried 28 Jul 1753 is most probably Hans
Jacob
Tanner's sister rather than first wife. The TANNERs definitely arrived
in Halifax prior to 1750 (son Christian bapt. 12 Oct 1750, may have
been
]born on board ANN) which lends credibility to the theory that they
are
the TANNERs listed as "Bound for the Carolinas" but redirected,
possibly
by Cornwallis, to settle in Nova Scotia. Dr. Winthrop Bell in his
"Foreign
Protestants", pp. 163-5, creates a strong argument for the TANNER and
MOSSMAN
families arriving in London, England on the ALDERNEY or NANCY prior to
continuing on to Halifax. In the Pennsylvania German Folklore
Society's
Vol. 16, pg. 194, it states that in a list of 122 families from the
Canton
of Schuaffhausen in Switzerland to the American Colonies, all 8 TANNER
families were from Bargen.
